The Chamber is keen to support all businesses sectors. We have a significant number of businesses in the region including construction, trade, marine, retail and earthmoving all of which are important to our economy and local employment.
GO LOCAL FIRST CAMPAIGN AND BUSINESS & COMMUNITY DIRECTORY
We have launched a Go Local First Campaign encouraging locals to support buying products and services locally where possible. Our objectives are to:
- Support Local Businesses
- Support Local Jobs
- Grow Our Community
We also want to see the campaign provide an opportunity to share and promote good business practices; to encourage new businesses into Cooktown (to fill current gaps) and to support the development of appropriate skills.
The Campaign is multi year and has 3 stages. Stage 1 is complete and we are currently working on Stage 2.
Our Progress
- Develop a spreadsheet of all Cooktown businesses to manage campaign
- Engage Cooktown businesses to get them to participate - physical meeting preferred
- Provide collateral and instructions to Cooktown businesses on how to display
- Launch with the public through poster and media campaign supported by eg. stalls at markets and high traffic venues
- Build online directory to be an available tool to inform about all products and services that are available in Cooktown
- Design and develop and localise collateral such as shopping bags
- Extend campaign to engage tourists to 'go local first'
- Design and produce print version of directory
- Investigate loyalty programs to identify potential programs for Cooktown
- Develop networks and forums for promoting and sharing best practice
- Identify major retailing or service gaps and investigate establishing new businesses in Cooktown
